Sunyani West MP: Voters Judge Leaders by Development, Not ‘Kingmakers’

ACCRA — The Member of Parliament for Millicent Yeboah Amankwah has urged students from the University of Energy and Natural Resources to focus on principles, service, and human relationships in politics, stressing that voters reward performance rather than political endorsements.

Speaking during an engagement with the students in Parliament, Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amankwah said electoral success is largely determined by a politician’s relationship with constituents, commitment to service, and readiness to work.

According to her, endorsements from political “kingmakers” may help, but they are not the deciding factor in elections. She described such support as merely “the icing on the cake,” arguing that voters ultimately assess candidates based on their character, dedication, and record of service.

The MP noted that constituents are primarily concerned about development and expect their elected representatives to deliver results regardless of party affiliation. She explained that MPs are often viewed as agents entrusted with the responsibility of advancing the interests of their communities and will be judged by their performance.

Hon. Millicent also encouraged the students to understand the philosophies and values behind political parties before joining them. She said political participation should be guided by conviction and principles rather than popularity or excitement.

She further emphasized the need for leadership education at the school level, arguing that young people must be equipped with a better understanding of politics, governance, and public service to strengthen the country’s democratic future.

“Your commitment, dedication, and readiness to work are what make people vote for you. The rest is only the icing on the cake,” she told the students.
