*ACCRA, Greater Accra Region* — Suame MP Hon. John Darko has called for Ghana to build “greener cities” with less carbon footprint and better natural resilience, urging government to invest in bike lanes and sustainable transport as the country marks World Environment Day 2026.
Contributing to a statement by Berekum West MP Hon. Dickson Kyere Duah, Hon. Darko said the World Environment Day theme “Inspired by Nature for Climate, for Our Future” means “the future of this country indeed depends on how well we treat our environment.”
He questioned whether Ghana’s big cities — Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale — are “green enough” compared to global examples. Citing Denmark and Amsterdam, he noted they use bicycles widely, with even public officials cycling to reduce carbon emissions. Singapore, he said, invests in sustainable housing, while Switzerland runs 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.
“It’s about time we dedicate resources to improve our bike lanes… it’s about time we improve so that we cannot be driving every day,” Hon. Darko stated. He added that traffic congestion and vehicle emissions are “killing our health” and keeping Ghana’s cities far from the world’s top green cities.
Hon. Darko agreed with his colleague that building a greener Ghana means cities designed to minimize carbon forestry and maximize natural resilience.
