*ACCRA, Greater Accra Region* — Berekum West MP has called for urgent action to cut methane emissions across agriculture, energy and waste systems, saying it is the fastest and most cost-effective way to slow global warming as Ghana marks World Environment Day 2026.
Reading a statement in Parliament, the MP reported outcomes from a regional seminar on African Parliaments for Climate Action held in Kenya by the Parliament of Kenya, IPU and Climate Parliament. Delegates from African parliaments, climate experts, development partners and regional stakeholders adopted a communique demanding stronger parliamentary leadership, enhanced regional cooperation, support for just and equitable energy transitions, and promotion of sustainable agriculture, energy systems and waste management.
“Metai is a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for significant share of global warming,” the MP said. “By cutting metai emissions, we can slow global temperature rise, improve air quality, protect ecosystems and enhance agriculture productivity and energy security as well as safeguard biodiversity.”
The MP also highlighted youth action in Berekum West, noting that climate action clubs have been established in senior high schools to nurture “a new generation of environmental stewards.” He described protecting nature as “not merely environmental obligation but a moral responsibility,” adding that students’ passion offers “hope for a greener and more sustainable future.”
He concluded by urging government, Parliament, private sector, civil society and citizens to work together with “renewed determination to build a Ghana that is greener, that is more resilient, that is environmentally sustainable for present and for future generations.”
