Electronic Road Tolls to Be Finalised by Q4 – Roads Committee Chair

The Chairman of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Isaac Adjei Mensah, has announced that all processes related to the introduction of the electronic road toll system will be completed by the fourth quarter of the year.

Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Mr Mensah stated that the Ministry of Roads and Highways is finalising contractual arrangements to ensure the successful rollout and operationalisation of the system.

According to him, the Ministry has taken the necessary steps to conclude the process, assuring that the long-anticipated electronic tolling system will soon become a reality.

His comments come in response to concerns raised by the Minority Caucus on the committee regarding developments in the road and transport sector, particularly the delay in introducing the new toll system.

Mr Mensah dismissed the Minority’s criticism, arguing that the previous administration failed to heed advice against the abolishment of road tolls, a decision he said negatively affected the country’s economy.

He, however, assured that the current government is committed to addressing challenges within the sector and restoring efficiency in road infrastructure financing.

On the legislative front, Mr Mensah revealed that steps are being taken to secure the necessary Legislative Instrument (L.I) to operationalise the National Roads Authority Act, which had earlier been passed and assented to but could not be implemented due to the absence of the required L.I.

He added that the Roads and Highways Minister is engaging key stakeholders to address concerns surrounding the bill and ensure its smooth implementation.

The government is expected to conclude all outstanding processes on the electronic road toll system by the end of the year, marking a significant step toward reforming road revenue collection in Ghana.
