Afenyo-Markin Rallies NPP to Secure 2028 Majority, Backs Bawumia

Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work towards winning a decisive parliamentary majority in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at a meeting with the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) on March 25, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence in the party’s strength despite its current Minority status with 87 seats in Parliament.

“We are 87, but trust me, we are mighty,” he said, downplaying the Majority held by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), which currently has 189 seats. He described their numbers as “empty” and insisted the NPP remains a formidable political force.

The Minority Leader called on party supporters to channel their efforts into securing a strong parliamentary majority to support the NPP’s presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, in the next election cycle.

Drawing parallels with the lead-up to the 2016 elections, Mr Afenyo-Markin said he senses a similar political momentum building in favour of the NPP.

“The feeling I had in 2015 is the same feeling I am feeling today,” he noted, expressing optimism about the party’s prospects.

He also suggested there is uncertainty within the NDC regarding its future leadership, referencing discussions about whether former President John Dramani Mahama would contest again.

In contrast, he emphasised that the NPP has a clear and “tried and tested” candidate in Dr Bawumia, whom he described as a leader with solutions capable of driving a new phase of transformation.

Mr Afenyo-Markin’s remarks underscore the NPP’s early push to reorganise and mobilise support ahead of the 2028 elections, with a focus on reclaiming parliamentary dominance.
