The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has criticised the government over the organisation of the ongoing African athletics competition, citing poor planning, logistical failures, and safety concerns.

In a Facebook post, Assafuah compared the event to the successful hosting of the 2023 African Games, noting that the previous government managed 29 sporting disciplines at an operational cost of about US$49 million, equivalent to roughly ₵548 million at the time.

He questioned why a single sporting discipline is now reportedly costing about ₵40 million despite what he described as weak coordination and visible organisational challenges.

The MP also criticised the Ministry of Sports for failing to secure hosting rights for the 17th Africa Aquatics Swimming Championships, which is being hosted by Algeria.

Assafuah further raised alarm over a reported incident in which an athlete’s jumping equipment allegedly broke during competition, warning that the athlete could have suffered serious injuries.

According to him, the current administration is prioritising public relations over proper investment in sports organisation, adding that Ghana risks sanctions and embarrassment from the international sporting community.
