FREE SPEECH ROW DEEPENS AS FELIX KWAKYE OFOSU FIRE BACK AT NPP

Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has rejected claims that the government is intimidating political opponents, accusing the New Patriotic Party of hypocrisy over its criticism of the arrest and prosecution of Kwame Baffoe.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, the Minister described the NPP’s allegations of shrinking free speech as “bogus,” insisting the current administration has not targeted anyone for expressing political opinions.

Kwakye Ofosu argued that the NPP cannot complain about threats to free speech after journalists, activists, and opposition figures faced arrests and prosecutions during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He also criticised former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for condemning recent arrests while remaining silent over similar incidents under the previous government.

According to the Minister, the case involving Abronye DC is not a government-led crackdown because the complaint was filed by a judge over alleged insulting remarks.

“Abronye did not attack the President or any member of government. He attacked a judge, and the judge is taking legal action against him,” he stated.

Kwakye Ofosu further pointed to the prosecution of the “Muntie Three” and the arrest of journalist Kwabena Bobie Ansah as examples of similar actions taken under past administrations.

He maintained that President John Dramani Mahama believes in protecting constitutional freedoms and cited Ghana’s recent improvement in the World Press Freedom Index as evidence that journalists and critics continue to operate freely.
