Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has disclosed that former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong gave him a $5 million cheque when his business was struggling, alongside providing 22 brand-new taxis and other support for economic activities in Winneba.
Afenyo-Markin made the revelation during an interview with Bernard on Channel One TV, where he recounted the financial, personal and developmental support he said he had received from Kennedy Agyapong over the years.
According to the Effutu MP, Kennedy Agyapong gave him the $5 million cheque without requiring him to sign an agreement, describing the gesture as a significant risk taken on the strength of their relationship and his potential as a businessman.
He explained that Kennedy encouraged him to use the money to revive his business, demonstrating confidence in his ability to recover from his financial difficulties.
Kennedy supported Winneba with 22 taxis
Afenyo-Markin also recalled that in 2013, when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was in opposition, Kennedy Agyapong provided 22 brand-new BYD taxis to support economic activities in Winneba.
He said the former Assin Central MP also provided a tractor for use in rural communities and outboard motors to support livelihoods.
The Minority Leader clarified that the vehicles and some of the equipment were provided under a work-and-pay arrangement rather than being given away entirely for free.
He further recounted that on election day in 2012, Kennedy travelled from Assin to Winneba Junction to provide financial assistance for campaign-related clean-up activities when his team was facing financial difficulties.
Kennedy guaranteed Suzuki vehicles for young people
Afenyo-Markin disclosed that in 2018, Kennedy Agyapong again guaranteed the provision of small Suzuki vehicles to enable young people to engage in commercial activities under a work-and-pay arrangement.
He said the assistance had become part of a longstanding relationship that extended beyond their political affiliation.

He recounted that their families had maintained close ties over the years, adding that the relationship had grown through shared experiences and mutual support.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that Kennedy’s contributions to Winneba were well known among residents and constituency executives.
ICT facility to be named after Kennedy Agyapong
The Minority Leader also revealed that an ICT facility he is constructing at Osu Bonpeyin in the Effutu Constituency is being named after Kennedy Agyapong in recognition of his support.
According to him, the project was conceived about five years ago and was still under construction at the time of the interview.
Responding to questions about their relationship, Afenyo-Markin repeatedly described Kennedy Agyapong as his friend, insisting that their bond was longstanding and should not be viewed as a surprise.
The account highlights the relationship between the two New Patriotic Party figures and the financial and constituency-level support Afenyo-Markin says he received from the former Assin Central MP.
