Hon. Ida Asiedu Adwoa has asked the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology to outline the measures being taken to address the environmental impact of sand winning activities within the Awutu Senya West District.
The MP raised concerns about the effects of uncontrolled sand winning on the environment, local communities and public safety, stressing the need for stronger regulation and sustained environmental protection.
She noted that in January 2024, the District Assembly imposed a temporary ban on sand winning activities in parts of the district. The decision was intended to regulate the activity, protect the environment and promote peace and harmony within affected communities through public education and stakeholder engagement.
Sand winning, when carried out without proper regulation, can contribute to land degradation, destruction of vegetation, soil erosion and damage to nearby water bodies. It may also create unsafe open pits and affect farming activities and residential communities.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has continued to draw attention to the potential dangers associated with unregulated sand winning, particularly for inland and coastal communities. These concerns include environmental degradation, risks to public health and safety, and the long-term impact on livelihoods.
Hon. Ida Asiedu Adwoa is therefore seeking clarification from the sector minister on the specific steps being taken to monitor sand-winning activities, enforce environmental regulations and protect communities within the district.
