The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Benard Ahiafor, has addressed reports of an unfriendly interaction with a journalist during a parliamentary engagement, stating that the incident was misinterpreted and emphasizing their respect for the media.

In a statement, Mr. Ahiafor highlighted parliament’s long-standing cordial relationship with the press and commitment to supporting journalists in their work.

“I hold the media in the highest regard and continue to value the indispensable role journalists play in sustaining our democracy,” the statement read.

Ahiafor explained that his concern was with the manner of interaction initiated by the journalist, not with the individual or the media institution.

He emphasized the importance of courtesy, decorum, and mutual respect in interactions between public officials and journalists, particularly within Parliament.

The First Deputy Speaker expressed openness to a one-on-one conversation with the journalist involved and reiterated his commitment to productive engagement with the media fraternity.
