Five Transport Unions Threaten Nationwide Shutdown Over Trading at Bus Stops

Commercial transport services across Ghana face possible disruption as five transport unions have threatened to withdraw their services on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, over the continued trading activities at designated bus stops and pedestrian walkways.

The unions, led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, have directed commercial drivers to park their vehicles and stay off the roads until further notice, citing the government’s failure to enforce regulations governing commercial activities at transport terminals.

The unions are demanding the enforcement of Regulation 142 of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2519, arguing that traders occupying designated bus stops and pedestrian walkways are obstructing transport operations and making it increasingly difficult for drivers to pick up and drop off passengers.

They have also accused authorities of applying traffic regulations unfairly, particularly through the TraffiTech-GH monitoring system, while allegedly failing to address unauthorised trading activities at bus stops and pedestrian walkways.

According to the unions, the planned industrial action follows unsuccessful attempts to persuade the relevant authorities to address their concerns.

The proposed shutdown could affect thousands of commuters who rely on commercial transport for their daily activities, including workers, students, traders and other members of the public.

The five unions organising the action are the GPRTU of TUC, Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.

The unions have apologised to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the withdrawal of transport services may cause.

They have consequently urged passengers to make alternative travel arrangements ahead of the planned action.

The unions have maintained that their decision is aimed at compelling authorities to enforce existing regulations and address what they describe as unequal treatment of commercial drivers.
