Minority Explains Why It Disagrees with Court Ruling on Chairman Wontumi
The Parliamentary Minority says its statement is not about defending Chairman Wontumi, but about protecting the rule of law and ensuring that every Ghanaian receives a fair trial. The caucus says Parliament has a duty to question the actions of state institutions whenever there are concerns about justice and fairness.
According to the Minority, everyone is equal before the law and deserves to be treated fairly, no matter their political background. They believe court decisions should be transparent and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.
The caucus also questioned why Chairman Wontumi was held personally responsible for the actions of Akonta Mining Limited. It argued that a company is legally separate from its owners, and a court should only hold an individual personally liable in special circumstances allowed by law.
The Minority further raised concerns about some legal procedures followed during the case, saying these issues deserve careful examination. It stressed that justice should be fair, consistent, and free from political influence.
The statement concluded by calling on all state institutions to uphold the Constitution, respect due process, and ensure that justice is applied equally to every citizen.
