Accra, Ghana – August 4, 2026 — The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to urgently complete ongoing works on the Accra–Kumasi Highway following the fatal multi-vehicle collision at Birimso Bridge that reportedly claimed at least 15 lives.
In a statement signed by the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Hon. Kennedy Nyarko Osei, the Minority expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
The Caucus also sympathised with those injured in the crash and wished them a speedy recovery, describing the incident as another painful reminder of the persistent safety challenges on one of Ghana’s busiest highways.
Complete Existing Highway Before New Expressway
While acknowledging the government’s proposed US$1.7 billion Accra–Kumasi Expressway Project, the Minority argued that immediate attention should be directed toward completing the existing highway works, including bypasses and unfinished sections.
According to the statement, approximately US$300 million would be sufficient to complete the outstanding works on the current highway, which they believe would save lives while preparations for the expressway continue.
“The immediate priority should be to complete the existing highway that can save lives now,” the statement stressed.
Highway Safety Must Become a National Priority
The Minority warned that the recurring accidents along the Accra–Kumasi Highway should not be treated as inevitable, urging government to fast-track ongoing construction works as a matter of national urgency.
The Caucus maintained that expediting the completion of bypasses and other unfinished sections would significantly improve road safety and help prevent future tragedies on the critical transport corridor.
The statement concluded by calling on the government to make the completion of the existing Accra–Kumasi Highway an immediate priority while the long-term expressway project progresses.
