The Attorney General has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his active involvement and leadership throughout discussions on Ghana’s constitutional reform process.
Speaking at the presentation of the government’s position paper on the Constitutional Review recommendations, the Attorney General said the President played a key role during a series of retreats where recommendations were carefully discussed.
He described President Mahama as “probably the most alert person in the room,” adding that his guidance helped make the work easier.
The Attorney General also expressed appreciation to members of Cabinet, including the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu-Kwakye, for their contributions and scrutiny of the document.
He further commended the Constitutional Review Committee and its secretariat for their dedication, as well as his Deputy, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, for managing the legal responsibilities of the Attorney General’s Department while he focused on the reform process.
The Attorney General explained that the government’s position paper, which runs for 89 pages, contains detailed responses to the committee’s recommendations.
He cautioned the media and the public against relying only on selected highlights, stressing that some recommendations have been accepted fully, others with modifications, while some will be addressed through Acts of Parliament rather than constitutional amendments.
“Constitutional reform is not a single event, but a continuing process,” he said, adding that the Constitution must remain a living document that reflects the aspirations of every generation of Ghanaians.
The final report of the Constitutional Review Committee and the government’s position paper are expected to be made available to the public for further engagement.
