Accra, Ghana — Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem South, has questioned the government’s claims on job creation, pointing to inconsistencies between figures presented by the President and official statistics.
Contributing to the debate on the State of the Nation Address in Parliament, Mr Awuku said the President indicated that one million jobs had been created, while figures from the Ghana Statistical Service reportedly place the number at about 330,000.
He said the discrepancy raises concerns about the accuracy of government data, particularly at a time when youth unemployment remains high.
Mr Awuku cited statistics indicating that 49.3 per cent of young people in the Greater Accra Region are unemployed, while about 1.95 million youth aged between 15 and 35 across the country remain without jobs. He urged the government to focus on addressing the real economic challenges facing young people rather than what he described as “Instagram governance.”
The Akuapem South legislator also reviewed commitments made by the government in the SONA, noting that he had tracked 112 promises and policy commitments, of which only 38 per cent had been delivered, leaving 62 per cent still in the pipeline.
Touching on the situation in cocoa-growing communities, Mr Awuku said farmers continue to face significant hardship, adding that some struggle to meet basic living conditions.
His remarks have added to ongoing debate in Parliament over the government’s economic management and its ability to deliver on key promises made to Ghanaians.
