The Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has described the tragic death of Charles Anissa as a clear case of systemic failure within Ghana’s healthcare system.
Delivering a statement on the floor of Parliament, he alleged that the deceased was transported in an ambulance to several health facilities but was refused admission. According to him, Charles was reportedly denied emergency care, with no vital signs taken and no immediate treatment administered.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin stated that the incident raises serious concerns about compliance with Ghana’s emergency healthcare policies. He referenced a 2018 state directive which prohibits health facilities from refusing emergency treatment to patients, regardless of circumstances.
He argued that the death was preventable and called for a full investigation into the matter to establish accountability. The Minority Leader further urged health authorities to review emergency response protocols to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
The case has sparked public debate about the efficiency of emergency healthcare delivery in Ghana and renewed calls for reforms to strengthen accountability within the health sector.
