The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a new guideline urging countries to make fertility care safer, more equitable and financially accessible, as new data shows that 1 in 6 people worldwide experience infertility.

According to the WHO, millions of individuals and couples are unable to seek help because treatment remains too expensive, unsafe or difficult to access, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

The organisation warns that infertility can lead to profound social and emotional distress, yet many people still face stigma, discrimination and financial ruin when pursuing treatment.

WHO is therefore calling on governments to integrate fertility services into national health plans, regulate private providers, ensure ethical standards, and expand affordable treatment options.

The guideline emphasises that everyone deserves the opportunity to build a family without stigma or financial hardship, and urges countries to take decisive steps to close the gap in access to care.
