Volta REGSEC orders temporary closure of Ho Central Mosque amid leadership dispute

The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in consultation with the Ministry of Interior, has ordered the temporary closure of the Ho Central Mosque for two weeks, starting Thursday, January 1, 2026, following a leadership dispute within the Muslim community.

In a statement signed by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, the council explained that the decision aims to maintain peace and security after tensions arose over competing claims to the position of Regional Chief Imam.

The REGSEC has also declared the disputed area a crime scene to support ongoing investigations until a permanent resolution is reached.

The move follows an urgent REGSEC meeting held on Monday, December 29, 2025, to address the situation. Authorities say the temporary closure is intended to restore calm and create a neutral environment for mediation and dialogue among all parties involved.

The council has urged the feuding factions to exercise restraint and engage in peaceful discussions, emphasizing that the safety of worshippers, the sanctity of the mosque, and unity within the Muslim community remain top priorities.
