Re-electing Bawumia will be a disaster for NPP – Prof. Frimpong-Boateng

Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against re-electing former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer, warning that such a decision could be disastrous for the party.

In an interview, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said the NPP in its current form no longer represents the party he once knew and served, expressing deep concern about its internal operations and direction.

He was particularly critical of the party’s internal electoral processes, alleging that the last presidential primaries were marred by widespread irregularities.

According to him, the party has failed to thoroughly examine the reasons behind its heavy electoral defeat, a situation he believes could lead to further setbacks if not addressed.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng warned that presenting the same candidate again without resolving the underlying issues that contributed to the party’s loss would be a serious error.

“We lost the elections badly, and we did not deal with the issues that led to the losses, and we still want to go in there. I think it will be a trainwreck if we elect the old flagbearer,” he said.

Despite his criticisms, he was quick to note that his comments were not motivated by personal dislike for Dr Bawumia.

He described the former Vice President as a “nice person” but stressed that personal qualities alone are not enough to secure leadership at the highest level of governance.

He further urged Dr Bawumia to publicly distance himself from individuals he believes were responsible for the economic difficulties experienced under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, should he seek to regain the trust of Ghanaians.

According to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, such a step would signal independence and a clear break from past policies and decisions that contributed to the country’s economic challenges.
