Osei Owusu urges Bawumia to unite NPP

The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, has urged the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to unite and embrace all aspirants who contested the party’s presidential primaries.

Dr. Bawumia secured victory in the primaries with 56.48 per cent of the total votes cast, while his closest rival, former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, garnered 23.76 per cent.

Speaking after the official declaration of the results on Saturday, January 31, Mr. Osei Owusu encouraged the former Vice President to rise above the celebrations and exhibit inclusive leadership by bringing together all factions of the party as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

“We call on H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia not only to celebrate success but to demonstrate benevolence. He must embrace all compatriots who participated in the contest and rally the entire party for the greater battle ahead in the 2028 general elections. The delegates believe he is capable of doing so,” he stated.

Mr. Osei Owusu also praised the other aspirants for their contributions to the party’s democratic process, describing the primaries as competitive yet peaceful and beneficial to party unity.

The other contenders in the race included former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
