The Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Hon. Nyindam Matthew, has called on Parliament to develop a policy that will ensure Members of Parliament receive police security during the night.
Speaking in an interview, Hon. Nyindam explained that many MPs do not engage their police escorts during the daytime, and in some cases, lawmakers do not allow their bodyguards or security personnel to report to duty on a daily basis. However, he stressed that the situation becomes far more dangerous at night when MPs are left without adequate protection.
According to him, night-time security is critical, and Parliament should not wait until a Member of Parliament is attacked or killed before taking action. He argued that preventive security measures are better than reacting after tragic incidents occur.
Hon. Nyindam cited past cases where Members of Parliament were killed at night, including the late JB Danquah-Adu and another MP, noting that investigations into those incidents are still ongoing, with no arrests made so far.
He therefore called on the Minister for the Interior, as well as the leadership of Parliament, to prioritize night security for MPs. He emphasized that night-time police protection is more important than having bodyguards follow MPs during the day.
