The Member of Parliament for Tema West, James Enu, has condemned what he described as unacceptable behaviour during a recent sitting of Ghana’s Parliament.
The incident reportedly involved some Minority Members of Parliament moving toward the mace in protest over a disagreement concerning a by-election following the passing of one of their colleagues. The Minority had insisted that a by-election should not be conducted, a position that generated tension in the House.
Hon. Enu warned that such actions risk undermining Ghana’s democratic stability and the dignity of Parliament. He stressed that since the country’s return to constitutional rule in 1992, Ghana has remained a beacon of democracy in Africa and must protect that reputation.
He commended members who exercised restraint and ensured that parliamentary business continued despite the heated atmosphere. According to him, Parliament must remain a place of order, respect, and responsible leadership.
The MP expressed hope that similar incidents will not recur, describing the situation as a “bad spectacle” that could damage public confidence in the legislative arm of government.
