The Minority Leader of Parliament, Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed outrage over the government’s decision to terminate the employment of Ghanaian youths who were employed after the 2024 elections.
Speaking in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin revealed that some employees who were hired as far back as 2017 were among those dismissed, despite the letter specifically targeting those employed after the 2024 elections.
The Minority Leader stated that his side had filed a motion, which was admitted by the Speaker, but the Majority Leader raised a preliminary objection that was overruled by the First Deputy Speaker.
Afenyo-Markin is now calling for the motion to be included in the House’s report, urging the government to provide justice for the affected individuals who have been without pay for over a year.
Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin, has taken note of the concerns raised by the Minority Leader, Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin, regarding the termination of employment of Ghanaian youths who were employed after the 2024 elections.
The Speaker acknowledged the long-standing issue of unlawful terminations and unpaid dues after government changes, citing instances dating back to the inception of the Fourth Republic.
He emphasized the need for Parliament to provide guidance on the matter and urged the House to consider the motion brought forth by the Minority Leader.
The Speaker assured that he would work towards scheduling the motion for consideration, recognizing the urgency and importance of addressing the platestation of the affected individuals
