Hon. John Darko Criticises Proposed Downgrading of Suame Interchange Project

The Member of Parliament for Suame, Hon. John Darko, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with recent comments made by the Minister for Roads and Highways regarding the Suame (Swami) Interchange project in Kumasi.

Speaking in response to the Minister’s remarks, Hon. Darko said the last time he personally engaged the Roads Minister, he was assured that the Kwame–Suame road project would be fully completed as planned. However, he noted that he has now heard the Minister state in a media interview that the Suame Interchange, originally designed as a four-tier interchange, will be downgraded to a two-tier project due to lack of funds.

Hon. Darko described the development as “very boring” and worrying, questioning why such a major infrastructure project in Kumasi is being scaled down. He called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and explain why the project is being allowed to deteriorate.

The Suame MP further argued that projects started by the previous NPP government have generally not been downgraded by the current NDC administration, but instead continued. He questioned why the situation appears different when it comes to projects in the Ashanti Region, particularly the Suame Interchange.

According to him, significant investments are currently being made in road infrastructure in areas such as the Tema Motorway and other parts of the Greater Accra Region, as well as other regions across the country. He therefore questioned why the Suame Interchange in Kumasi is being excluded on the grounds of funding constraints.

“Why is it that when it comes to Kumasi and the good people of Suame, the Roads Minister says there is no money?” Hon. Darko asked.
