Speaking on the floor of Parliament during his contribution to a statement by Rev. Hon. Helen Adjoa Ntoso, MP for Krachi West, on the recent Volta Lake boat disaster, Hon. Annoh-Dompreh expressed concern about the recurring accidents on the country’s inland waterways.
He described it as “regrettable” that vessels operating on the White Volta, Black Volta, and Lake Volta often lack basic safety equipment such as life jackets.
“No one can justify why these safety measures are not upheld,” he stated, stressing that the continued absence of proper enforcement has contributed to avoidable tragedies.
The Minority Chief Whip urged the Ministry of Transport, the Ghana Maritime Authority, and other relevant agencies to take immediate and decisive action to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations.
“We can’t inflict pain on people and then show regret,” he said, emphasizing that preventive measures must replace reactive responses.
Recalling past incidents on Ghana’s water bodies, Hon. Annoh-Dompreh called for a comprehensive and lasting solution to end the recurring loss of lives and property.
“It’s time we draw the lines and curtains on these concerns and deal with it once and for all,” he concluded.
