The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the University of Ghana to immediately reverse any fee increases for the 2025/2026 academic year, after the Commission discovered that the university had raised tuition and introduced new charges without prior approval.
In a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, GTEC reminded the institution of its earlier directive dated November 3, 2025, which explicitly prohibited any fee increases for publicly funded tertiary institutions for the current academic year.
Despite this, the university reportedly increased fees by 25% in some instances and introduced new levies, including the 75th Anniversary dues and a Development Levy.
GTEC’s letter demands that the university:
- Reverse all unauthorized fee increases immediately.
- Credit continuing students who have overpaid compared to last academic year’s fees.
- Refund final-year students who paid in excess.
- Revert all dues, including SRC and GRASSAG fees, to the previous academic year’s rates.
- Suspend any newly introduced fees unless expressly approved by the Minister of Education.
The Commission has set a compliance deadline of January 12, 2026, warning that failure to comply will attract “serious regulatory sanctions” against the university.
