Farming is profitable – Mahama tells appointees at National Farmers’ Day

President John Dramani Mahama has urged government appointees to actively invest in agriculture, describing farming as a reliable pathway to wealth creation and national development.

He noted that agriculture remains one of Ghana’s most dependable economic sectors and revealed that he personally invests in farming and continues to benefit significantly from it.

The President made the call at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration held in Ho under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.” The event brought together farmers, exhibitors, and key stakeholders to celebrate the dedication and contributions of Ghana’s food producers.

Addressing the gathering, President Mahama stressed that with the right commitment and investment, agriculture has the power to transform lives and strengthen the national economy. He challenged public office holders to lead by example by engaging in farming to boost food production while improving their own livelihoods.

“Agriculture is profitable, and I am living proof,” he said. “I encourage all appointees to take farming seriously. Beyond contributing to food security, it can also serve as a substantial source of income.”

President Mahama further commended Ghanaian farmers for their resilience and dedication despite challenges such as economic pressures, climate change, and rising production costs. He emphasised the need for sustained government support to keep the sector vibrant and productive.

The celebration featured a display of agricultural innovations, products, and best practices, and honoured outstanding farmers and fisherfolk for their exceptional contributions.

The event once again underscored the central role of agriculture in national development and renewed calls for increased investment particularly from leaders in public service.
