The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has declared his intention to vie for a top leadership position within the party as it gears up for the 2028 elections.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kumasi on Tuesday, Wontumi emphasized the need for a “reset” within the NPP to strengthen its structures and reconnect with the grassroots ahead of the next general elections. He highlighted areas such as youth engagement, internal democracy, and strategic planning as critical components that the party must address to maintain its dominance.
“I am committed to working with every NPP member to ensure our party is more united, transparent, and ready to deliver in 2028,” Wontumi said. “We must correct past mistakes, empower our regional executives, and focus on policies that resonate with Ghanaians nationwide.”
Wontumi, known for his outspoken style and strong influence in the Ashanti Region, indicated that his bid is motivated by a desire to contribute to the party’s long-term growth rather than personal ambition alone. He called on all party stakeholders to embrace a culture of accountability and collaboration.
Political analysts suggest that Wontumi’s move could shake up the NPP leadership landscape, particularly in the run-up to the next election cycle. With the party already facing internal debates over succession planning and strategy, his entry into the race may spark new conversations about the direction and vision of the NPP.
As the 2028 elections approach, all eyes will be on how Wontumi’s push for a party reset resonates with members and whether it could translate into broader support at the national level.
