Hon. Yakubu Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, has issued an unreserved and unqualified apology following public concerns over a comment he made during a visit to The Citadel School.

In a statement dated July 31, 2026, the MP said his attention had been drawn to a video circulating on social media regarding remarks he made during the school visit.

According to him, the comment was made within the context of the long-standing playful cultural relationship between the Mossi and Dagomba ethnic groups. He explained that, as a Mossi addressing members of the Dagomba community, the remark arose from the friendly exchanges that have historically characterised relations between the two groups.

However, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed acknowledged that, regardless of his intention or the cultural context in which the statement was made, the comment was inappropriate because it involved a child.

“I fully acknowledge that, irrespective of my intention or the traditional context in which the statement was made, the comment was inappropriate because it involved a child,” he stated.

The MP said the remark was not intended to cause harm, disrespect, embarrassment or discomfort to the pupil, her family, the school authorities, the Dagomba community or the general public.

He expressed regret over his choice of words and rendered an unreserved and unqualified apology to the relevant authorities, the school authorities, the pupil, her parents and family, and the general public.

Hon. Yakubu Mohammed further stressed that, as a Member of Parliament, he recognises the responsibility attached to his words and public conduct.

He reaffirmed his commitment to protecting and respecting the dignity, welfare and rights of every child.

The MP concluded the statement by offering what he described as his “sincere and unqualified apology.”
