The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on Members of Parliament to comply with a government directive regulating the use of police escort services and sirens.

Reading a communication on behalf of the Minister, the Speaker said the Ghana Police Service has been directed to enforce the policy, including the removal and seizure of unauthorized sirens, the discontinuation of unauthorized police escort services, and the institution of legal action where necessary.

Speaker Bagbin stressed that the efficient, accountable and lawful use of public resources is a matter of national interest. He noted that the Ghana Police Service performs critical constitutional functions, including maintaining law and order, protecting lives and property, and preserving public safety. As such, its personnel and resources must be deployed judiciously, equitably, and strictly in accordance with the law.

He also warned that the indiscriminate use of sirens undermines road safety, weakens public confidence in lawful authority, and reduces the effectiveness of emergency and security services that genuinely require priority access.

The Speaker reminded MPs that Parliament has consistently passed laws promoting accountability, transparency, and prudent management of public resources. He said lawmakers have a greater responsibility to obey the very laws they enact and to uphold the highest standards of public conduct.

Speaker Bagbin encouraged MPs who need clarification on the directive to seek guidance through the appropriate institutional channels. He added that the Office of the Speaker will continue to engage with the Executive, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant state institutions on issues affecting security operations, parliamentary privileges, and the independence of Parliament, with the aim of strengthening Ghana’s democratic institutions and advancing the public interest.
