WEIJA PAEDIATRIC HOSPITAL — CONTRACTOR DEMANDS RETRACTION FROM HEALTH MINISTRY

Lawyers for Awerco Construction Limited have demanded an immediate retraction and apology from Ghana’s Ministry of Health over claims contained in a press release on the delayed operationalisation of the Weija Paediatric Hospital.

According to the Solicitors, the Ministry’s May 5, 2026 press release falsely portrayed the company as responsible for delays in commissioning the hospital and accused the contractor of inflating medical equipment prices by up to 11 times their actual cost based on alleged concerns raised by the World Bank.

The lawyers insist the allegations are unfounded and say the supposed concerns were never communicated to their client for clarification or response. They further argue that the contractor fulfilled its obligations under the contract and had repeatedly written to the Ministry requesting payment for over a year without receiving any response.

The statement also rejected claims by the Ministry that the contractor halted the commissioning process until all outstanding matters were resolved. According to Awerco Construction, the company only highlighted the need for critical protective systems such as UPS units and Automatic Voltage Regulators to protect sensitive medical equipment and ensure the facility operates properly.

The company stated that in a March 18, 2026 letter, the Ministry acknowledged completion of the project and indicated plans for immediate occupation and operationalisation of the hospital. In response, the contractor said it outlined the contractual handover procedures and raised concerns over unpaid financial obligations and technical safeguards.

Lawyers for the company further noted that end-user training required under the contract has not been undertaken because the Ministry has failed to meet its financial obligations, including delayed payment damages. They warned that failure to complete such training could pose operational and safety risks to patients and staff.

The contractor accused the Ministry of attempting to divert public attention from its own inaction and warned that the publication has the tendency to damage the company’s reputation and business interests.

Awerco Construction is therefore demanding the retraction of portions of the Ministry’s press release, particularly paragraphs two and four, within 24 hours, warning that legal action will be pursued should the Ministry fail to comply.
