Hon. Kofi Adams has urged football fans, clubs, referees, and stakeholders to uphold discipline and promote peace as Ghana marks the 25th anniversary of the May 9 Stadium Disaster.

The Minister said football should unite people and promote friendship rather than become a source of violence and tragedy. He warned supporters against hooliganism and emotional reactions during matches, especially over controversial officiating decisions.

Speaking ahead of the commemoration, he stressed that disagreements in football are inevitable but violence and disorder can never be justified. According to him, supporters and clubs must use lawful and appropriate channels to address concerns instead of taking the law into their own hands.

Kofi Adams also appealed to referees and match officials to remain professional, fair, and vigilant in the discharge of their duties to help reduce tension at match venues.

The May 9 disaster occurred on May 9, 2001, at the Accra Sports Stadium during a Ghana Premier League match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko SC, leading to the death of 128 football fans following crowd disturbances and a stampede.

The Minister said the anniversary should not only honour the memory of the victims but also reinforce the need for discipline, tolerance, and improved safety measures in Ghana football.
