Nanton MP Apologizes to Youth Over Recruitment Challenges, Calls for Decent Jobs

The Member of Parliament for Nanton Constituency, Mohammed Sherif Abdul-Khalid, has apologized to Ghanaian youth over the challenges surrounding ongoing security service recruitment, stressing that young people have every right to demand decent and sustainable jobs from government.Speaking on the issue, the lawmaker noted that many young people vote for governments with the expectation that their mandate will be fulfilled, particularly in the area of employment and improved living conditions.According to him, the youth deserve not just jobs but good and dignified employment that can support a decent standard of living. He also raised concerns about the recruitment process into Ghana’s security services, explaining that in many other jurisdictions such recruitment exercises are free and transparent, without applicants being required to pay money. However, he acknowledged that Ghana has not yet reached that stage, which has led to frustration and emotional stress among many young applicants.Hon. Abdul-Khalid therefore used the opportunity to apologize to the youth of Ghana who have gone through what he described as a mental and financial burden during the recruitment process. The MP noted that the National Democratic Congress government has only been in office for one year and three months, and there is still room for improvement in addressing the challenges. He added that the Ministry of the Interior and the government have learned important lessons from the situation and are currently deliberating on possible measures, including the possibility of refunding monies paid by applicants who purchased recruitment forms.Hon. Abdul-Khalid emphasized that unemployment poses a serious security threat, warning that if young people are unable to secure decent work, it could lead to wider social instability. He therefore urged government and policymakers to remain committed to delivering the jobs and opportunities promised to the youth, stressing that every Ghanaian deserves access to meaningful employment and a dignified livelihood. 🇬🇭
