Accra, Ghana — Hon. Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, Member of Parliament for Pru East, has urged the government to prioritize funding for smallholder farmers—especially women—to enhance agricultural productivity and economic growth.
Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Boam highlighted the critical role women play in farming but noted they face significant barriers in accessing credit, limiting their ability to scale production and improve yields. “Accessible financing for farmers is not just support; it’s an investment in Ghana’s future,” he stressed.
He cited Opportunity International Savings and Loans’ 20-year commitment to farmers and the support rural banks in Pru East provide to pepper farmers, but emphasized that more practical support, including climate-resilient practices and irrigation, is urgently needed.
Agriculture remains a key employment sector in Ghana, and empowering women farmers benefits entire communities, reduces poverty, strengthens food security, and creates jobs. Hon. Boam called for a multi-stakeholder approach, urging government agencies, financial institutions, and development partners to collaborate on accessible credit, extension services, and climate-smart technologies.
By heeding this call, Ghana can reduce import dependence, boost food security, and build a thriving, resilient agricultural sector.
