Sammi Awuku Slams NDC Over Reduced Cocoa Prices and Soaring Electricity Tariffs

Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Sammi Awuku, has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over what he describes as broken promises on cocoa prices and the rising cost of electricity amid worsening living conditions.

Mr. Awuku said the NDC government had promised cocoa farmers a price of GH₵3,600 per bag, but barely a year later reviewed and reduced it to GH₵2,587. He argued that the reduction comes at a time when many Ghanaians are struggling with hardship and a high cost of living.

He also raised concerns about electricity tariffs, describing the increases as “skyrocketing.” According to him, although the government claims on paper that electricity tariffs have risen by about 30 percent, the actual impact on consumers is far higher.

“In reality, the increase is more than 100 percent. We feel it, we live with it, so we know,” he stated.

Mr. Awuku added that there are several issues in the State of the Nation Address that require careful scrutiny. He said the Minority in Parliament will take time to thoroughly review the address and clearly point out what they consider mistakes and inconsistencies by the government.
