President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to unite in restoring and protecting the country’s land against illegal mining.

The President speaking at a graduation parade of the Ghana Military Academy, he emphasized the need for collective action against illegal mining, highlighting the devastating impact on country’s natural resources.

According to the president,  strict measures of government such as forests and river bodies declared security zones and prosecution of offenders are bringing results with rivers like the Pra, Ankobra, and Ofin recovering as a positive sign towards progress in the fight against illegal mining also known as galamsey.

The government has established the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operation Secretariat (NAIMOS) and implemented measures to combat the menace, including strict enforcement, public education, and alternative livelihoods.

President Mahama indicated that illegal mining will be confronted decisively, and called for all Ghanaians to rally behind this cause for the benefit the nation as a whole.
