Congested mortuary: Korle Bu to conduct mass burial of over 300 unclaimed bodies

Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has announced plans to carry out a mass burial of unclaimed, unknown and unidentified bodies currently at its mortuary due to severe congestion and lack of space.

In a statement, the hospital explained that the mortuary has reached full capacity, making it necessary to take urgent steps to decongest the facility.

KBTH is therefore appealing to relatives, next of kin or any persons with interest in bodies deposited at the mortuary to contact the hospital’s management within 21 days of the notice to make the necessary arrangements.

The deadline for claims has been set for on or before January 18, 2026.

According to hospital records, about 320 unclaimed bodies remain unclaimed.

Management stated that all bodies that remain unclaimed after the deadline will be buried
in line with approved procedures and relevant regulations.

The mass burial exercise will be carried out in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

Management of the hospital has appealed to the general public for understanding and cooperation as it undertakes the exercise to address the current challenges at the mortuary.
