Commercial Transport Operators urge crackdown on roadside trading amidst alarming road accident statistics

Acting Chairman of Commercial Transport Operators, Asonaba Nana Wiredu, , has sounded the alarm on the pressing issue of road safety in the country, citing disturbing statistics where approximately 13,000 road accidents have been recorded, resulting in over 2,000 fatalities.

Speaking on Happy FM’s Morning show with Fati Shaibu Ali, he emphasized that road accidents constitute a national security issue requiring immediate attention.

The root cause, he pointed out, is partly the proliferation of roadside trading, which poses significant risks to both traders and drivers.

According to Legislative Instrument (LI) 2180 2012, regulation 117, trading at roadside, bus stops, or railways is strictly prohibited. Those found breaching this regulation face prosecution.

Asonaba Nana Wiredu is calling on police officers to rigorously enforce this law to ensure drivers can operate with peace of mind, thereby reducing accidents.

Commercial Transport Operators stress that roadside trading heightens accident risks, particularly when vehicles experience brake failure. With lives at stake, they urge authorities to act swiftly to mitigate this hazard.
