NSB embarks on modernisation drive to counter misinformation, strengthen national security

The Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Dr. George Atta Boateng, has announced an ambitious retooling and modernisation programme aimed at strengthening Ghana’s intelligence architecture in response to rising threats driven by misinformation and disinformation.

Delivering the welcome address at the inauguration of the Bureau’s Volta Regional Office on Friday, December 5, Dr. Atta Boateng warned that the country is increasingly confronted with “dangerous rising misinformation and disinformation campaigns,” often executed by anonymous online actors pursuing political, financial and other motives.

He said such activities undermine public trust and national cohesion, making it critical for security institutions to upgrade their capacity.

To meet the evolving threat landscape, the NSB is undertaking a comprehensive overhaul of its operational systems.

According to Dr. Atta Boateng, the ongoing reforms include the creation of stronger digital infrastructure, enhancement of surveillance systems across all sixteen regions of Ghana, and significant improvements to the Bureau’s cyber-intelligence capabilities.

The Bureau is also investing heavily in training its workforce to effectively execute its mandate.

He noted that these initiatives align with government’s broader national security reforms aimed at positioning the NSB as a modern, technologically advanced intelligence institution capable of responding swiftly and effectively to emerging threats.

Dr. Atta Boateng expressed gratitude on behalf of the Bureau’s leadership and officers for the continuous support and commitment shown by government, pledging that the institution will remain anchored on duty, integrity and dedicated service to the public.
