Importers and Exporters Association urges focus on retraining port officials over AI deployment

Importers and Exporters Association Urges Focus on Retraining Port Officials Over AI Deployment

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana is calling on the government to prioritize retraining frontline port officials rather than rushing to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) at the country’s ports.

In an interview with Happy Kaseɛbɔ, the Association’s Executive Secretary, Samson Asaki Awingobit, argued that the existing ICUMS platform already has the necessary tools to curb revenue leakages, and strengthening human expertise would yield better results.

Awingobit suggests that the focus should be on motivating ethical officers and removing corrupt ones, rather than introducing a parallel AI system. “Ghana already has the technology, but needs to improve human systems,” he said.
